Zhongdian (Gyalthang, Shangri-la) Zhongdian county, Gyalthang (Jiantang) in Tibetan, and now official name as Shangri-la, county seat at Zhongxin (mean center) township, alt 3400M, 680km to Kunming, exists on herding historically, and now with little light industry. The town is a mix of lots of different ethnic groups, Han and Tibetan being the predominate ones. The sprawling Songzanlin Monastery (Ganden Sumtsanling Monastery or Guihua in Chinese, Gelup sect of Tibetan Buddhism) . "Shangri-la", a "heaven away from the turmoil mundane word", in Tibetan, mean as "land to sacredness and peace."
Note: In Chinese, Diqin is a TAP in Yunnan, and Deqin is a county in Diqin TAP; but mostly in Enlish Dechen or Deqin stands for Diqin TAP or Zhongdian area or Shangri-la.
